KINO OLYMPIA / The Wizard of the Kremlin

The Wizard of the Kremlin
Russia in the early 1990s. The Soviet Union has collapsed. Amid the chaos and a country rebuilding itself, an exceptionally intelligent young man, Vadim Baranov (Paul Dano), walks his own path with determination. First an avant-garde artist, then a reality TV producer, he becomes an unofficial advisor to a former KGB agent on his way to absolute power—a man who will soon be known as “the Tsar,” Vladimir Putin (Jude Law). Having reached the heart of the system, Baranov rises to become the spin doctor of the new Russia, shaping speeches, perceptions, and the sense of reality. One person, however, remains beyond his influence: Ksenia (Alicia Vikander), a free and elusive woman who represents the possibility of escape—far from political influence and the exercise of power. Fifteen years later, having retreated into silence, Baranov agrees to speak. What he reveals blurs the lines between truth and fiction, belief and strategy. The Wizard of the Kremlin is a descent into the dark corridors of power—a film in which every word is part of the plot. The film is based on Giuliano da Empoli’s novel The Wizard of the Kremlin.
