The Two Souls of the Baltic Sea: Tapio Kekkonen’s photography exhibition brings the depths and shores of the sea to the Hanko City Hall Gallery

HANKO – May 15–June 2, 2026 – Tapio Kekkonen, one of Hanko’s best-known photographers, is opening his new exhibition, *The Two Souls of the Baltic Sea – Waves, Wrecks, and Moments on the Shore*. The exhibition is a tribute to the sea, which has been Kekkonen’s primary source of inspiration since the 1950s.

New technology, a timeless understanding of light
Although Kekkonen has been documenting Hanko for decades, he is not afraid to innovate. The exhibition
makes use of modern drone and underwater photography, offering viewers
previously unseen perspectives. One of the highlights of the exhibition is a mysterious shipwreck, which has been
captured both from the air and from beneath the surface, shrouded in twilight.

“No matter the technique, light is always at the heart of it all.”
“The sea is never the same. It requires patience on the part of the photographer to catch that perfect moment when light and water meet,” Kekkonen reflects.

A Surprising Gallery Experience and a Voice for Young People
Nanda Björklund is responsible for the exhibition’s visual design and layout. The gallery features a special “wow effect” that captivates visitors from the moment they step inside.
The artistic perspective is expanded by the students of Class 4A at Hanko Central School, whose Baltic Sea-themed poster competition entries are on display as part of the exhibition.
