OLYMPIA THEATER / KRAKEN

Kraken
The killer shark faces off against the horror of *Alien* in *Kraken*, a film that blends eco-thriller elements with the visual spectacle of a disaster movie. Marine biologist Johanne arrives on assignment in the village of Vangsnes, on the shores of Sognefjord, Norway’s deepest fjord. The reason is the mass deaths of salmon, which she suspects are linked to technology being tested at a local fish farm. The invention repels parasites from the fish using sound waves. The police are also forced to intervene when bodies wash ashore. The sound wave experiments have set in motion something far greater, something that has lived undisturbed in the deep waters of the fjord, over 1,200 meters below the surface. Legends of the mythical giant squid, the Kraken, have been told by Norwegian sailors since the 17th century. These stories are also believed to have inspired the Cthulhu creations of horror fiction icon H.P. Lovecraft. Among more recent works dealing with giant cephalopods is Risto Isomäki’s novel The Island of the Kraken (2025). Partially filmed in Finland, Kraken also features strong Finnish expertise. Key creative leaders of the large Finnish production team include costume designer Janne Karjalainen and production designer Kari Kankaanpää.
