Romería – In Search of Hope

Spanish director Carla Simón’s third feature film, *Romería*, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, is a poignant and captivating family drama about a young woman who sets out to uncover the truth behind her father’s untimely death. Romería tells the story of 18-year-old Marina, who arrives on the Spanish coast to meet her biological father’s relatives—people she has never met before. She encounters a group of new aunts, uncles, and cousins, unsure whether they will welcome her with open arms or treat her with reserve. These encounters bring deeply buried memories to the surface, stir up emotions, and reveal family secrets that have been kept silent for years. From these fragmented stories, Marina gradually begins to piece together a picture of her parents, and her journey of discovery becomes a memorable experience that brings her closer to herself and her own roots. Director Carla Simón is known for her film This Land (Alcarràs), for which she won the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival. This autofictional film is based on the director’s own experiences as a teenager.
