STARMAN

A charmingly satirical play about the threat to biodiversity.

Officials at the Galactic Central Office have noticed that a phenomenon known as “nature conservation” is gaining popularity, which does not fit with the Central Office’s plans. Consequently, Starman is sent to the scene (Martti Suosalo), an interstellar warrior who, fueled by frogstimulant, bursts into the monologue performance to set things right.

Starman is a charmingly satirical and timely play about nature and the threats to its diversity. The play shifts focus to various settings where the state of nature and the fate of humanity are discussed. In turn, the spotlight falls on the Forester, the Activist, the Sparrow, and the Biologist. Above all, the interstellar character Starman causes confusion, as he tries hard to influence the course of the performance and perhaps the entire development of humanity…

Starman, a play exploring the issue of biodiversity loss, originated in late 2022 from conversations between Juha Kauppinen and Martti Suosalo. The play premiered in August 2024 in the tent of Teatteri Sirkus Suosalo in Alli Trygg Park in Helsinki and has since received an enthusiastic reception in every town it has visited.

Performed by Martti Suosalo and directed by Raila Leppäkoski, the monologue unfolds with minimalist touches into a series of incisive, timely remarks, at the vivid heart of which lie Suosalo’s virtuoso acting skills.

Kauppinen’s satirical text depicts a time overshadowed by grief and despair, yet laughter constantly rises to the surface. The viewer is allowed to laugh, but is constantly forced to wonder: what and whom are they ultimately laughing at—the characters, other people, or themselves?
