THEATER CIRCUS SUOSALO / Stones in His Pockets

August 15 @ 7:00 PM9:30 PM

STONES IN HIS POCKETS

Charlie and Jake, (Martti Suosalo and Mika Nuojua), journey through the lives of many men in the play Stones in His Pockets. Directed by Pentti Kotkaniemi, the play intertwines human destinies and experiences with the history of Ireland. Stones in His Pockets is a phenomenon in Finnish theater – it has been performed to sold-out audiences since 2002.

The director praises the play's concept: 'I find it remarkable that only now has a contemporary writer utilized the medieval mysterio buffo method, where an actor transitions to another role simply by changing rhythm and emphasis.' Suosalo and Nuojua are precisely the ones capable of this 'hat-changing' technique. Together, they perform 15 roles. 'The transitions are lightning-fast, and the range of characters extends from a glamorous American beauty to a 75-year-old country bumpkin,' Kotkaniemi explains.

However, the story is not just a two-man joke night. 'No, Stones in His Pockets is a tragic comedy and a challenging two-man play,' says Mika Nuojua. The story begins when 35-year-old losers Charlie and Jake go to work as extras on an American film set, only to find themselves doing something entirely different from what they anticipated.

Director Kotkaniemi states that the play is typical actors' theater. 'That's why both gentlemen need to be virtuosos. Fortunately, they are, and that's a lottery win for a director.'
