TAPIO KEKKONEN PHOTO EXHIBITION. The Two Souls of the Baltic Sea

May 25 @ 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Free

The photo exhibition features Tapio Kekkonen’s maritime-themed photographs and poster drawings by Class 4A of Centralskola.

Tapio Kekkonen – Interpreter of the Sea and Light
Tapio Kekkonen has been capturing the atmosphere of his hometown
in Hanko with his camera since the 1950s. The time he has spent behind the camera
has made Kekkonen a familiar face in local cultural life. He has been
honored with, among other things, the Hanko Culture Award for his significant work
with the Hanko Foto Festival.

Exhibition theme: The Many Faces of the Sea
At the heart of the exhibition is the subject closest to Kekkonen’s heart—the sea. Hanko’s
unique beaches, which stretch far into the Baltic Sea, inspire Kekkonen and
offer ever-changing views.
Although Kekkonen curiously utilizes modern technology, such as drones and
underwater photography, these are merely tools for him to discover new
perspectives. The exhibition features, among other things, a fascinating shipwreck,
which has been captured using both techniques—from a bird’s-eye view and
from beneath the surface, embraced by darkness.

Light is the foundation of everything
Although photography has evolved over the decades from film
to digital, the basic principle has remained the same. Kekkonen still relies on
the most important lesson from the analog era: understanding light is the essence of a successful
photograph.

Technology opens up new angles, but it is the interplay of light and shadow
that brings the shores of Hanko to life. The sea is constantly changing. This requires
patience from the photographer so that he can capture the exact moment when
light and water meet.
