KINO OLYMPIA / Kokuho – Master of Kabuki

Kokuho – The Kabuki Master
Nagasaki, 1964. Young Kikuo witnesses his father's death in a yakuza clan conflict. Hanjiro II, the greatest kabuki star of his time, takes Kikuo under his wing, thus saving the boy's life. Kikuo dedicates his life to kabuki theater alongside Hanjiro's son, Shunsuke. Decades of dedication bear fruit. His tumultuous career is filled with brotherhood and betrayal, accolades and scandals. Kikuo becomes a star, even though his yakuza background becomes a burden in the highly closed kabuki circles. Kikuo reaches the master class of kabuki, becoming a national treasure. Having drawn an astonishing 13 million viewers to cinemas in Japan, Kokuho - The Kabuki Master is visual poetry. Sofia El Fani's (Blue Is the Warmest Color) cinematography makes Kumiko Ogawa's costumes and the heavily made-up stars sparkle. The young men perform in kabuki theater according to the onnagata tradition: in these tragic stories, they dress as beautiful maidens. Kokuho – The Kabuki Master was Japan's official Oscar candidate and received a nomination for Best Makeup.
