Guided Tour of the "Shards" Exhibition

In March 1940, Hanko was ceded to the Soviet Union as a naval base in accordance with the peace terms of the Winter War. The entire city of Hanko was evacuated of Finns, and the Soviet Union stationed approximately 27,000–30,000 soldiers and a total of about 28,000–40,000 inhabitants in Hanko, including family members who arrived with the soldiers and other civilians.

While Soviet forces fortified Hanko, the Finns built their own defensive line around Hanko.

Dr. Jan Fast launched the Hanko 1941–1944 project in 2018. The goal of this project is to study the wartime events of the Hanko peninsula from a multidisciplinary conflict archaeological perspective.
