DESCRIPTION:Music of the Sunrise\nThe first main concert in the Hanko Plays summer concert series, featuring bright, expansive music for oboe, strings, and piano. \nIn this midsummer concert, the oboe’s piercingly clear sound and the characteristic brightness of Mozart’s music resonate with the earliest rays of the sun in the annual cycle. The oboe quartet and Schumann’s hopeful, expansive, and human oboe works are contrasted by Josef Suk’s dramatic piano trio. The Czech composer’s work, however, also contains flashes of light, and the swaying movement of the second movement brings to mind barcarolle—or boat song—music. Dvořák’s serene Waldesruhe (“Forest Peace”) paints a picture where the sun’s light is filtered green beneath the canopy of leaves.
